"I don't know why I'm overweight."

Your brain on Sharpies.

If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. People generally have their body shape for two reasons: behavior and environment. Some people aren’t aware of these things, and they can be difficult to change even once you start noticing them, but if you think about it you can change your habits by changing your environment. This takes some insight and mindfulness about your surroundings. Do you have children who always seem to have candy and snacks around and find yourself mindlessly munching on them (the snacks, not your children)? Does your workplace always have donuts in the break room? Do you watch TV while mindlessly snacking on sugary snacks and sipping softdrinks?

The way out of this mindless weight gain is to introduce mindfulness into your day, start noticing what you are putting into your body, and then make improvements to your environment. Have healthy snacks on hand that can satisfy the urge to hit the donuts at work or mindlessly consume while sitting in front of the TV. One of the most powerful ways to do this is to do a pantry purge. Go through your entire kitchen and anywhere else you store food and remove anything that contains added sugar. This includes anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup in it. For extra credit get rid of anything with grains and industrial seed oils like canola, soy, and corn.

Don’t just throw that food in the garbage! It’s better than eating nothing at all so support your local food bank by donating it to them.
