How to Become Fat-Adapted

To be fat-adapted means that your body can easily make use of stored body fat for energy. Most people eating the Standard American Diet today are sugar burners because their bodies expect a constant source of quickly burning sugar-filled food. Sugar burners can rarely last 4 hours without becoming hungry. Fat burners, however, can skip a meal or two without becoming hangry or feeling like they’re beginning to starve.

Burning sugar is like trying to keep a campfire burning with nothing but paper. Yes, it burns hot while you’re giving it fuel, but it quickly burns out and needs more paper to keep going. Being a fat burner (fat-adapted) is like keeping a long burning fire going by giving it solid pieces of hardwood as its primary fuel.

You can encourage your body’s natural ability to burn fat by reducing its access to sugar and increasing the access to healthy fats. In an evolutionary context this is telling your genes that your immediate environment is poor in sugar and rich in healthy plant and animal fats. This is the natural mode our ancestor’s bodies became accustomed to live in. Until very recently we did not live with toxic levels of sugar at every meal with sugar filled snacks filling in the brief times between those meals.

To become fat-adapted you must:

  • Stop eating foods with added sugar.

  • Stop eating grains. These carbohydrates are converted to sugar as part of our digestion process. Grains are not an essential food for the human diet.

  • Eat more protein and fat from natural, healthy sources such as fish, grass fed animals, and plants such as avocados and nuts.
